Muscle signals and salivary biomarkers. Two Recumed projects combining biological research with technology, co-financed by the European Union.

Telerehabilitation platform with an EMG armband
Between 2017 and 2019, we developed a telerehabilitation platform combining a sensor armband, an application and a system based on neural networks. The project aimed to provide a tool for independent exercise at home, with feedback on how movements were performed.
The platform uses electromyographic (EMG) signals, which record the electrical activity of muscles, together with accelerometer and gyroscope data. It combines these inputs with analysis based on neural networks and predefined movement patterns.
Feedback during an exercise, known as biofeedback, allows users to relate their movements to a reference pattern. The documentation also describes access to an exercise history so that earlier records can be reviewed.
The measurement armband design
The design documentation describes a flexible armband with eight compartments joined by flexible connectors. Seven compartments contain sensor modules, while the eighth houses the Bluetooth and power module. The modules are connected by wires.
This arrangement brings the measurement components, communication and power supply together in a single armband worn on the arm. Data can be transmitted by Bluetooth to a compatible device, such as a computer, and used by the platform to analyse exercises.
The platform’s planned scope
The project scope also included tools for organising exercises. Planned features included instructional videos, movement descriptions, exercise groups and scheduling. The instructional material was intended to accompany exercise sessions, while a history of records and report generation would support work with data from the armband.
Access through a web browser and Android and iOS applications was envisaged. The project therefore brought together muscle activity measurement, instructions, feedback and the organisation of exercise at home. It was a research and development project focused on the use of EMG signals in telerehabilitation.

Recumed’s research and development project explored the use of salivary biomarkers in research into chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The project scope covered immunochemical tests and an application for reading their results.
The research focused on four salivary biomarkers: CRP, PCT, NE and AAT. The team’s findings were presented in a scientific publication examining these measurements alongside spirometry results.
The project combined work on saliva-based tests with digital analysis of their readings. This was accompanied by research into the biological and genetic mechanisms of COPD, described in a literature review.
